Iowa QuiltScape for July 19, 2019

Congratulations to Marianne Fons & Liz Porter!

Celebration 2019 is underway right now at The Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana. This three-day celebration of quilting will conclude on Saturday with an induction ceremony as Liz Porter and Marianne Fons join the ranks of other quilters who have reached “Hall of Fame” status for their contributions to the art of quilting.

Marianne & Liz learned to quilt right here in Winterset in 1976. Over the course of the next several decades, the duo channeled their love for quilting and their entrepreneurial spirits into careers and a company that included Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting, the largest-circulated quilting magazine in America. They have guided countless of quilters through their first stitches or helped them improve their technique and expand their skills.

They are both retired now and Marianne serves as board president here at the Iowa Quilt Museum. We are so proud of both of them, and extend our congratulations on this well-deserved honor.

On October 1st, we will open an exhibit of their quilts here at the Iowa Quilt Museum titled Liz & Marianne’s Homecoming! It will be on display through early January.

Monday, July 22nd – RAGBRAI in Winterset

The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa is coming to Winterset on Monday, July 22nd. We will be open (an extra hour, actually) but there will be 15,000+ bicyclists in town that day. It will be an amazing sight to see, but if that’s not really your thing, then you might want to pick a different day to visit!

Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting

Curated by Judy Schwender
On display through Sunday, September 29

A wonderful Quilts of Valor award ceremony!

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in our previous exhibit, Quilt of Valor Salute, and the wonderful Quilts of Valor Award Ceremony that was the conclusion on Sunday, July 7th. So many talented and generous people contributed to the quilts in this exhibit and the award ceremony and seventeen heroic veterans received comforting Quilts of Valor in gratitude and honor of their service to our country.

Thank you for reading Iowa QuiltScape.
Get out and enjoy some quilts!

I have what I think is a very old quilt of my mother’s. I’m wondering if your museum would be interested in it.
