Iowa QuiltScape for July 11, 2019

Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting

Opening Reception • Friday, July 12th • 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Iowa Quilt Museum

The Iowa Quilt Museum is thrilled to be working with Judy Schwender, retired curator from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, for our latest exhibit, Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting. This exhibit will be on display at the IQM through September 29th.

The art of quilting has evolved over hundreds of years, often impacted by shifts in social class and advances in technology. This exhibit explores the progression of quilts and quilting over the course of the past 700 years, and most rapidly over the past 180 years—examining its basic materials, its most rudimentary tools, and current day gadgets. If you’re a lover of historic quilts, this is a ‘must see’ exhibit!

Unveiling our Red & White Fundraising Quilt

Friday at the Opening Reception

This Red and White Fundraising Quilt was a large part of our fundraising efforts for opening the Iowa Quilt Museum and we’re grateful to the wonderful people who contributed to the IQM who will be recognized through this quilt. It’s been a long time in the making but we’re finally ready to unveil the completed top. (We’ll display the un-quilted top for a bit in order to catch and fix any errors that might exist.) The unveiling of this fantastic quilt will add another layer of excitement to Friday’s opening reception for “Stitched Through Time” and we hope you can join us.

“Thank You” to our sponsors

Motorcoach Trip to International Quilt Study Center & Museum

Friday, August 2nd
Leaving from the Iowa Quilt Museum

Our motorcoach trip to the International Quilt Museum is starting to fill up but we still have plenty of room for you! Join IQM director, Megan Barrett on Friday, August 2nd, for a visit to this fabulous museum without having to worry about the driving!

While at the International Quilt Museum, we’ll see the following exhibits: ‘Collecting & Recollecting,’ ‘SAQA 30th Anniversary,’ ‘150 Years of Red and White,’ ‘Kathy Caraccio: Quilt Series,’ ‘Liz Axford: Overlay,’ and ‘Whimsy.’ We’ll be treated to a guided tour through some of the exhibits and others can be self-explored. The tour will also include a behind-the-scenes tour of the storage and preservation rooms of the IQSCM.

No tour of quilts would be complete without some shopping and this trip is no exception. Shopping destinations will be announced closer to the trip date.

The price of the tour is $100 per person ($90 for IQM Members) and includes: comfortable motorcoach transportation, admission to the IQSCM plus a behind-the-scenes tour, lunch and snacks, trips to two quilt shops (sorry, no allowance provided!) and quality time spent in the company of like-minded quilters! A portion of your registration cost also helps support the Iowa Quilt Museum enabling us to continue providing top-notch exhibits and programming.

The tour will depart from the Iowa Quilt Museum at 7:00 am and return at approximately 9:00 pm. The IQM will be open at 6:30 am for those early birds who would like to view the exhibit before departure, and will re-open for 30 minutes upon our return for the night owls. The exhibit at that time will be “Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting” curated by Judy Schwender.

Register for the trip online or call the Iowa Quilt Museum at 515-462-5988 to register. A minimum of 39 travelers are needed by July 26th, so grab a friend and get signed up today for this fun experience!

Call for Bicycle Quilts

Here in Winterset we’re making our last-minute preparations for the 20,000 cyclists who will roll into our town on Monday, July 22nd as a part of RAGBRAI (the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.) One way that we’d like to welcome them to the IQM is with a pop-up exhibit of bicycle-themed quilts. If you know of a quilt that fits the bill, contact us at director@iowaquiltmuseum.org.
